  • This was our housing in Bangalore from August 3-6, and 17-18, 2011.
  • Attended early morning worship service at the Institute; had breakfast
    at the Institute dining hall; spent the morning setting up, finding a bank
    for an ATM withdrawal, and resting from our flight
  • Shubha was Other Sheep's key contact person in Bangalore; she
    recommended us to most, if not all, the people we met with in
    Bangalore as well as the Bishop we met with in Kerala
  • Leave OS materials (papers and/or TCAF book) with Shubha
  • Jose spent the evening getting a sim card for our  cell phone with the help of
    a local individual who was attending ISI (Indian Social Institute) workshops
  • During our stay here at the Indian Social Institute (for lodging only and some
    meals), we leave OS material (papers and/orTCAF book) with various
    human rights individuals who we meet at ISI who are here attending human
    rights workshops

    on campus)
  • Professor Evangeline introduces us in chapel to the student
    body.

    College, Bangalore, to visit with students during a fellowship time
    following the chapel service
  • Jayson, among other students, takes interest in the ministry of

  • Students are from different regions of the world and with varying
    religious backgrounds.
  • Jayson invites us to his campus room where he shows us a

  • Introduce the ministry of Other Sheep
  • Florence David encourages us to work in cooperation with INSA if
    able; to use INSA as a point for distribution of literature; INSA has
    outlets all  over India

  • Afternoon:  Divide and conquer
  • Steve works at his computer at the library of United
    Theological College
  • Dr.C.I.David Joy (Professor) briefly introduces himself to
    Steve in the library and informs Steve that he will be in
    Trivandrum to hear Steve speak on Saturday, August 7.
  • JOSE DOES TWO FLIP INTERVIEWS (while Steve is at UTC library)
  • Early evening:  With AKAI, VISIT A SECOND LGBT CENTER. It appears
    smaller than the Sangama LGBT center; consists primarily of offices
  • Jose records Akai on his FLIP recorder as Akai gives an interview to a
    local newspaper reporter
  • Later:  Find a nice restaurant in the Mahatma Gandhi Road area in
    downtown Bangalore

  • Geeth Hotel - our first choice/stop - Internet was not working in the
    room
  • Classic Ave Hotel - where we finally set up - very nice (more
    expensive); Internet is working in the room
  • Swim on hotel roof!  A snack and a nap, then dinner.
  • A young gay Muslim man (who wishes to remain anonymous)
  • This individual was the person who invited us to come to India to
    meet with a group of human rights activists in Trivandrum
  • This individual was the person who put us in touch with Shubha
    Chacko in Bangalore

  • Jose awakes in the morning sick
  • Steve goes to breakfast alone; Steve has a breakfast sent to the room
    for Jose
  • Steve goes to drug store for medicine for Jose (and checks out
    cheaper hotels along the way - all inadequate)
  • Steve goes to copy store and has 60 copies of each of the following
    papers made (and then returns to copy store - makes two trips - to pick up
    the order):
  • MEETING WITH HUMAN RIGHTS INDIVIDUALS 3:00 PM
  • This is the scheduled meeting for which we came to India (thanks to
    our anonymous gay Muslim young man who scheduled this)
  • Jose is well enough to attend
  • Setting - 16 people in attendance, seated in a "round table" format
    for interaction and discussion
  • Steve and Jose present their personal stories
  • Steve's papers (see titles above) and the book The Children
    Are Free are distributed to interested parties
  • Much discussion between attendees regarding human rights in
    India
  • Dr. C. I. David Joy from United Theological College of
    Bangalore is in attendance

    he stays in extra bedroom in our cabin-like inn; leaves 3:30AM for train (to
    another state - his home)

  • WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL DAY -- We take a 24 hour private houseboat
    cruise on the famous backwaters of Kerala. Absolutely fantastic.  Our first
    time off since arriving in India
  • Meals on the houseboat served up by an all male crew
  • Evening walk along the backwater canals
  • Visit a small temple; observe the beautiful sunset skies

  • Still on the houseboat - until around mid-morning
  • Steve observes stars 3:00AM;  and takes a 6:00AM walk (Jose not a
    morning person!). Breakfast together on boat
  • VISIT A SUPPORTING BISHOP (by appointment)
  • Spent the day traveling by bus to/and from the home of a highly
    recommended Bishop (name withheld)
  • We are received into his home; the Bishop discusses with us available
    materials he uses in India on LGBT topics
  • We leave OS materials ( 3 sets of:  papers and a copy of TCAF) with
    the Bishop
  • VISIT A (non-supporting) SENIOR VICAR GENERAL of the SYRIAN
    ORTHODOX CHURCH and leave OS material (papers and TCAF book) with
    the Vicar (since we were passing through; not by appointment)
  • Visit briefly with one pastor on campus
  • Return to our cabin on the backwaters of Alleppey
  • VISIT WITH TWO TAIWAN TOURISTS, one who works in social work
    (leave with her TCAF and "ex-gay" paper)

  • Steve gets up early and visits with local, Indian neighbors; Jose joins in later
  • Steve MEETS and DISCUSSES with local married woman
  • For seven years prior to her marriage, she worked with the area
    "Jesus Youth Movement" which was "not a church organization,
    but transcends the church"
  • Her response to Jose and Steve as a gay couple:  "But it is a sin"
  • After some discussion with her, suggestion the contrary, she
    said:  "We have homosexuals in the church but they don't reveal
    their feelings"
  • Leave with her OS materials (papers and TCAF book)
  • Check-out of cabin (following breakfast) for early train to Cochin

Fort Cochin
  • Arrive in Cochin by train; taxi to Fort Cochin
  • Search for and find a reasonable hotel and settle in:  Koder House
  • Ajeesh, "your friendly driver," was fantastic -- we kept him as our Fort
    Cochin driver for all our needs and some sightseeing
  • Prepare packets for tomorrow's VISIT TO FAITH BAPTIST BIBLE
    COLLEGE
  • Purchase large envelopes; address envelopes per professor
  • Arrange transportation with hotel receptionist (who was very, very
    helpful throughout our stay)

Fort Cochin (and traveling away from Fort Cochin for the day)
  • VISIT FAITH BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE (not by appointment)
    FBBC website
    Leave the hotel at 8:40AM and return to Fort Cochin at 2:30PM
  • President SambhuNath De and his wife Molly De (professor) both
    receive us graciously in the president's office
  • President De, is understandably cautious at first, but then is willing to
    hear us (Steve and Jose) out once he learns Steve is the uncle of a
    pastor in the states with whom he works.
  • Different opposing views are exchanged graciously;  
  • President De accepts the material for the professors and offers to
    indeed give the material to the respective professors for their critique
  • Packets were prepared in advance for each professor
         For 13 professors - name  of each prof. on envelope
         (Including the president and his wife)
  • Packets included four papers by Rev. Steve Parelli
  • 3 copies of The Children Are Free were given to Pres. De for
    faculty use
  • Back at hotel - Koder House (2:30pm) -
  • Swim in hotel pool; lunch at hotel restaurant
  • Steve takes 20 minute nap while Jose goes to purchase (in cash) air
    tickets to Bangalore from a travel agent,  (Ajeesh transports Jose)
  • Steve and Jose get haircuts at local barber shop (and come out to the
    barbers there as husband and husband)
  • Staff at our hotel - the Koder House - know us as "husband and husband" -
    we field a few questions during our stay
